Stephan Balleux’s paintings, 3D videos, drawings and sculptures explore issues of pictorial perception and the conceptual idea of painting. The artist is engaged on an exploration of painting’s identity and the place it holds in the current artistic production challenged by digital and virtual technologies.
Far from denigrating or reacting against these new media, the painter employs all available tools, old and new, in order to endlessly question the pictorial medium.
Balleux’s artistic research, which inscribes him to a post-modern pictorial tradition, consists of taking painting itself as the main subject matter. The artist aims to produce specific sensations such as the distortion of the senses or the creation of a visual ambiguity within pictorial practice.

- Rene Descartes
The human race is intoxicated with narrow victories, for life is a string of them like pearls that hit the floor when the rope breaks, and roll away in perfection and anarchy.
- Mark Helprin
